MODULE 7: Activity 5C - Engaging Students in a Project
As a teacher, I have often created projects to do several things, among which is to get students to share their knowledge and experiences with each other, encourage their communication skills and foster team work.
I am of the firm belief that many hands make work light and I have seen students learn more from their peers than from being engaged with a teacher. This gives light to the fact that chalk and talk with the teacher monopolizing the focus of learning has been a myth.
I enjoy the creativity and innovations shown by students especially where parameters of presentations have been relaxed and technology encouraged.
Overall, the benefits of project based learning allow me to work with smaller groups after basic instructions, it allows me to also deal with issues that may arise by encouraging students to speak up (with a smaller audience). Marking/assessment becomes easier as the mark scheme was previously issued and group assessment frees up some time that would have been used for individual assessment.
